Acupuncture reduces postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting.

In a controlled and double-blind study researchers found acupuncture reduced postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting and the amount of analgesia required following upper and lower abdominal surgery.

The patients receiving treatment had acupuncture needles inserted into points in the bladder channel on the back.
After the surgery the acupuncture group had less pain and used 50% less morphine, had up to 30% less nausea and up to 50% lower concentrations of cortisol and epinephrine than the non-acupuncture group.
